The cottage where you are staying is located right between two cultural monuments in the village—so significant that someone even had them registered in the Slovak Central List of Monuments.

And to add a touch of mystery, according to oral tradition, a secret underground passage once ran between them, passing right by our house. But let’s not keep you in suspense.

The oldest monument is the nearby ancient hill “Hrádok,” which hides the remains of an old fortification within its depths. The second is the neighboring Gothic church, which the renowned photographer Kálay even included in his book Divy Slovenska (Wonders of Slovakia).

If you’d like to learn more, just around the corner in the next building, you’ll find our small local museum. There, you can discover the story of the yet-underrated, conscious bishop “Čobrda,” who was, perhaps uniquely among Slovaks, persecuted under three different state regimes. You will also learn about the writer “Fraňo Kráľ,” who, as a barefoot little boy, used to sneak into the noble Smrečáni family’s garden for forbidden fruit—right on the very spot where our cottage now stands. Many people know this story from his book Jano.

Nearby, you’ll also find the manor house of the “Smrečáni” family. You are, in fact, standing in the very heart of the mini-historical center of Smrečany, where several members of the ancient noble “Smrečáni” family rose to the rank of county governors, both in Liptov and Orava.
